My awakening to midwifery and birth work began with my first pregnancy in 1999. I knew I wanted to have a natural birth and began searching for childbirth education classes. I had hired the obstetrician that my mother suggested not even thinking of anything. I was under the impression that he would give my all the information I needed, educate me about my body and my upcoming labor, and support me during my journey. This was my first pregnancy and I had no reason to believe my doctor would not do these things. I began my Bradley Childbirth classes and it was eye opening. I was so grateful that I was learning about my body, the changes it was going through, how my baby was growing, what my options were for birth, how to cope with labor, and what to expect from the hospital. I also realized that I was in charge of my body and I was empowered to make the decisions about my care and my birth. After I took the hospital tour it all hit me like a ton of bricks, I could not have my baby there so I chose a homebirth when I was in my 8th month of pregnancy. My birth was everything I wanted it to be, surrounded by love and support and birthing the way I wanted to birth. After that experience I knew I had to be involved in the birthing community. I had to help spread the information and empower other women. I wholeheartedly believe birth is unique and individual, there is not one way to birth but the majority of women, especially in Las Vegas, aren't even realizing they have choices. My main goal is to ensure there are no regrets, that women take an active role in their health and their birth and make the choices that are right for them.
In 2000 I gave birth to a 9 lb, 9 oz baby girl in my bedroom and into my arms. In 2002, I gave birth to a 9 lb baby girl in my bedroom and into my husbands arms. It was after this second birth that other events in my life gave me the opportunity to stay at home with my girls and follow my passion. I started my training to become a certified Bradley Childbirth Educator, and started teaching later that year. In 2003, I began attending births for labor support and assisting my midwife at births. I continued teaching and doing doula work and in 2005 realized I wanted to be a midwife. I didn't really want to go through a nursing program, I wanted to serve mainly as a homebirth midwife so I looked into distance education and self study paths. I apprenticed with a few different midwives off and on in Las Vegas and juggled being a stay at home mom and a busy doula. In 2008, I was able to commit to a full time apprenticeship with April Kermani, CPM and applied for the certification program through the North American Registry of Midwives. In October, 2009 I completed that program and became a Certified Professional Midwife.
